NCAA OVERTIME PROCEDURES

STUDY NOTES

Assume the contest is tied at the end of regulation time.

If there are any dead ball penalties that have occurred at the end of regulation they will have to be applied in the overtime period.  It is possible that a crew can have “problems” at the end of a tied game that could result in dead ball infractions.

Remember, the game (quarter) cannot end on an accepted penalty, so you may have an untimed down involved – so administer accordingly!

Take a brief “intermission”.  Have the crew meet in the center of the field and briefly go over procedures.  Then break to positions similar to the start of the game.  R and U will bring in the captains to the center of the field.

Procedures

Visiting team captain will call the toss (be sure to ask him his preference, H or T prior to the toss so all understand what his call is.)  Toss the coin!  All crew members record the team winning the toss.  Remember, there is NO KICK OFF involved.  The starting line is the 25 yard line assuming the ball is not relocated due to a DB penalty.

Overtime is divided into Overtime Periods.  The Game clock DOES NOT RUN.  Only the 25-second clock is operative.

Options Are:

  1. Offensive
  2. Defense
  3. End of the field

The team winning the toss can elect any one of the three options.  The end of the field selected will be where each team runs their series of downs.  Within each possession series, both teams get one and only one time out regardless of how many TO’s remain before the possession series started.

Needed Extra Periods:  Loser of the toss gets their option in {2,4, 6, …}  (even no, periods): The winner gets their choice in {1,3,5, ….} – odd numbered periods.

SERIES: Has two meanings.

In normal periods, series means a succession 4 scrimmage downs.  In OT terms it means however many downs it takes for the team in possession to either score or fail to score before the ball is relocated or a new OT period begins.

In OT periods it is best to use the term, POSSESSION SERIES to denote a team’s continuous possession of the ball

Each team is allowed ONE POSSESSION SERIES within each extra period.

Scoring:  Kick for 1 point or go for two points following a TD.  However, if play goes into the 3rd OT period or more, then in order to score, a team will have to go for two points (if a TD is scored) in order for the points to count.  A team may kick for 1 point but it will not count in OT periods 3,4, …

Example 1:  A starts on its 25, takes two downs and gains to the 12.  Hence a new series of downs begins all within the possession series for the OT period.

Example 2:  Team A throws a legal forward pass.  B intercepts and runs to the B 20 where B25 is downed.  Team A’s series is over and Team B gets the B and the designated 25 yard line UNLESS a DB penalty is involved.

Example 3:  Team A with 4th and 5 and the 20 attempts a field goal.  The kick is blocked behind the NZ where A picks it up and advances to the 15.  Award a new series for A at the 15, first and 10.

Example 4.  Team A with 4th and 5 and the 20 attempts a field goal.  The kick is touched by B beyond the NZ.  A12 recovers the ball at the 12 yard line and runs it in for an apparent score.  Outcome.  Team A’s ball at the spot of the recovery…..A can only recover – not advance.  A starts a new series at the spot of the recovery.

Example 5:  A attempts an unsuccessful field goal.  The kick is short and B catches the kick at the B5 and starts back up field.  B fumbles at the A10 where A recovers (change of team possession) and downs the ball.  In OT, it is B’s ball at the 25 or, we go into the next extra period.

PENALTY ENFORCEMENT IN OT PERIODS

Fouls that occur before team B gets possession are administered just like before.

Usually for fouls occurring after team B gets possession we would normally use the try or succeeding kickoff as the enforcement spot.  Remember, there is no kick off in OT periods.

In 2002 –New Rule:

Flagrant personal fouls in 2-9-1 that occur AFTER Team B gains possession are enforced at the START OF the next possession series or the next extra period (3-1-3-g)

Example 6:  A starts on its 25 and throws a legal forward pass which B intercepts and runs for a 4-yard “gain”.  During the run back, A34 forearms B66 in the face mask.  Result here is A34 goes to the bench, B gets the ball, spot the ball at the 25, indicate the PF and mark off half the distance down to the 12 ˝, B’s ball first and 10.

Example 7:  With the score tied at 21-21, A snaps the ball at the 25 and B intercepts the pass and runs back for a score.  No flags thrown. Result: B scores 2 points, game over; B wins 23-21.  No need for B to have it’s possession series.

Example 8:  First possession of an OT period with the score still tied.  A fails in its possession series to score.  At the end of A’s last play, B66 “trashes” the A quarterback!  Dead-ball infraction.  B66 takes a hike and B will get the B at the 40 yard line first and 10.

Example 9.  New possession series with A trialing by 7.  On the second play of the series, A10 completes a TD pass to A88.  B69 commits either a PF or some type of DB foul during the down or after the ball is dead.  A’s options are: 1.  Decline the penalty and go for the try; (2) Have the penalty enforced on the try (could make a difference if A has to go for 2).  Given the result of the try, this foul will not carry over (no kick off).  Either the game is still tied or the game is over depending upon the outcome of the try!

Example 10:  In OT, A scores but A15 calles B88 a ##@#@!@*** and the almost deaf umpire happens to hear it and throws his flag.  DB infraction!  The TD stands.  B has the option of enforcement on the try – does not carry over!  In this case the U is to blame for hearing what was said!

Example 11:  First possession series where A throws a legal pass and B23 intercepts it at the B 5-yard line and returns it to the B13 where he is tackled legally.  Unfortunately during B’s run, B 66 clips in B’s endzone.  By rule, since there is no kick off, B’s penalty is DECLINED by rule and B gets the ball for its series at the 25.  A’s series is over.  Now, the R has to go and explain that to A’s head coach!
